This course examines the institution of family through historical and cross-cultural perspectives. Attention is given to family structure in US society and its interconnectedness with economic conditions, race and ethnic differentiations, religious beliefs, status expectations, gender ideologies, and legal definitions. Emphasis is on the history and politics of marriage and cohabitation, sexuality, changing notions of childhood and parenthood, dependent care, gender roles in the family, race and ethnic-based variations, and social policies that shape family life.
