COR 130G - Topics in the Art of Living Well Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3 Maximum Credit(s) Awarded: 3
This course translates the classical concept of living well as an art (ars vitae) into a modern context and focuses it on foundational ideas for new college students. Using one or more literary works as a springboard for discussion, students are invited to think about concepts such as identities, fundamental beliefs, the importance of friends, partners, and community, the role of hope, the power of anticipation and delayed gratification, the proper place of wealth, mentoring, hospitality, the ethics of leadership, and conflict resolution. Current events are woven into the discussions as appropriate. The culmination is a personal mission statement in which students reflect on the various ways in which living well is actually living for others in the pursuit of a more just and compassionate world.
This course is viewpoint neutral.
Edgewood COR courses provide an integrative framework for students to understand themselves, become aware of the needs of the world, and develop the gifts they have been given to create a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world.
