What does it mean to “come of age”? The passage into adulthood is so uniquely exciting and challenging that the “coming of age story” stands as its own category of literature and film.

All stories of the struggle to define one’s identity, build community, establish moral and ethical codes for oneself, and craft plans for the future are different¾but they share characteristics that help us understand that even in this very individual struggle, we are not alone.

We will situate our own heritages and identities in the broader context of American culture. The process will help us articulate and reflect upon our attitudes regarding not only personal identity, but also other cultures and their values.
