ANES 812  - Practicum I

Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 4
Maximum Credit(s) Awarded: 4

This practicum sequence begins after successful completion of the didactic and simulation courses in year one. The clinical exposure will begin in year two and continue until graduation. The nurse anesthesia student will be assigned to a clinical setting four days per week. Each nurse anesthesia student will be clinically guided and educated by one certified registered nurse anesthetist. The earlier practicum courses will introduce the student to basic technical skills (placement of an endotracheal tube utilizing direct laryngoscopy) and the professional role of a CRNA. The student will prepare a care plan for each case, each day, and will discuss their anesthetic plan with the CRNA they are paired with for that specific day. As the practicum courses continue throughout the year, exposure to more difficult and complex cases will begin. The nurse anesthesia student must prepare and plan their anesthetic prior to the case and provide care in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative settings. Students will be rotated to various clinical sites to ensure each student has reached the required anesthetic cases to gain eligibility for the national certifying examination. Local and national anesthesia conferences and seminars may be required throughout the nurse anesthesia practicum.   Students will also be expected to present and discuss cases with members of the surgical medical and nursing staff, the post-anesthesia nursing personnel, and at weekly clinical case conferences held in assigned anesthesia departments.
