ANES 814  - Practicum II

Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 4
Maximum Credit(s) Awarded: 4

This practicum sequence begins after successful completion of the didactic and simulation courses in year one. The clinical exposure will begin in year two and continue until graduation. The nurse anesthesia student will be assigned to a clinical setting four days per week. Students will provide a pre-operative assessment and develop anesthesia care plans for more complex patients under the direct supervision of a certified registered nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist instructor. Students will operate at a more advanced level, begin to develop more complex anesthesia care plans, and administer anesthesia care more independently. The nurse anesthesia student must prepare and plan their anesthetic prior to the case and provide care in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative settings. Students will be rotated to various clinical sites to ensure each student has reached the required anesthetic cases to gain eligibility for the national certifying examination. Local and national anesthesia conferences and seminars may be required throughout the nurse anesthesia practicum.
