PSY 346 - CROSS-CULTURAL LIFESPAN DEVELOPMENT

The course will involve travel to Arequipa, Peru for four-week of study in partnership with the St. Mary’s Catholic University in Arequipa. Students will spend a small portion of their time in traditional classroom study, and most of their time in community education and community learning projects.

This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of lifespan developmental psychology in the context of an international, community-based learning environment. The course is organized in a topical format that provides a framework for an interdisciplinary study of human development from conception to death, applying lenses informed by psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The areas of physical, cognitive, personality, and social development will be explored for each life stage.

Community-based learning will occur through travel, visitation and engagement with different types of communities and individuals within Peru. These experiences will provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge of human development from a cross-cultural perspective, while learning about the history and communities of Peru, with a focus on the Arequipa and Cusco regions.
