HCA 680  - Integrity Care: Patient Safety/Risk

This course explores the principles, methodologies, and best practices for developing and sustaining safe healthcare delivery systems that protect patients from harm while promoting organizational excellence. Students will examine comprehensive approaches to patient safety, including risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies, through systematic quality improvement methodologies. Key topics include Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), National Patient Safety Goals, Communication and Resolution Programs (CRP), Clinical Risk Management (CRM), adverse event disclosure protocols, and the analysis of adverse and sentinel events. The course emphasizes the development of high-reliability organizational cultures that promote psychological safety, transparent communication, and continuous learning from safety events. Through case studies, simulation exercises, and practical applications, students will develop the competencies necessary to implement evidence-based patient safety initiatives that enhance patient outcomes, reduce preventable harm, improve organizational performance, and foster sustainable safety cultures across healthcare delivery systems.
