COR 230V - CARING FOR CULTURAL MEMORY Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3 Maximum Credit(s) Awarded: 3
This course begins with a week spent in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in August, where students will take part in St. Mary’s University College’s International Summer School, a structured immersion week of integrated arts, culture, and political activities associated with the Féile an Phobail (the Festival of the People), which is the largest community festival in Ireland. During the fall semester regular course meetings, we will “unpack” the experience and learn how Féile an Phobail functions as an example of intentional “caring for cultural memory,” specifically in response to Northern Ireland’s history of The Troubles. We will engage with some of the theory surrounding how cultural memory works in general, so that students can gain from the course not only a better understanding of The Troubles and their legacy in Northern Ireland, but a sense of how cultural memory works in different contexts, including their own. Cross-listed: GS 230.
Offered Fall, Spring
Course Fee: No Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of COR 1 or COR 199
