Department Overview

The CIS and CIS/BUS majors are designed to provide students with solid grounding in computer information systems as well as business, and prepare students for direct entry into the workforce as computer information systems professionals in the roles of web and mobile developers, cyber security and network administrators, data analysts, agile information systems engineers and IT project managers, or to give them strong foundation for further graduate study in computer science. The department identifies the following five goals:

Concepts of Information and Computer Technology: Students should demonstrate the ability to efficiently use computers with end-user software to solve real life problems. Additionally, students should be able to apply these concepts in a variety of contexts, including using data to advance knowledge within an organization or a discipline setting.
Application Development: Students should demonstrate the ability to solve complex application problems, be able to implement those solutions using current Object-Oriented programming languages within web and mobile environments, to develop and engineer information systems using Agile approaches and integrate individual application systems into overall organizational information systems.
Cyber Security and Networks: Students should be able to apply the concepts of cyber security, network design and administration, while addressing the ethical implications of privacy and security of personal and organization information.
Project Management: Students should demonstrate the ability to participate as a member of a project team in the solution of two real-life problems at a professional quality level through development of multi-user systems, employing project management techniques, user accepted testing strategies and audit controls.
Fundamental Business Concepts: Students should demonstrate comprehension of fundamental business concepts in accounting, marketing and organizational theory (to be done in cooperation with the School of Business).

Department Policies

Due to the interactive nature of the Computer and Information Sciences curriculum, all students in the major and minor degrees are required to use a laptop computer throughout the duration of the program. To obtain specific information about the laptop computer configurations, students should contact the Chair of the Computing & Information Sciences Department.

A student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in CS 178 and CS 270 and/or CS 180 , or written consent of the Computing & Information Sciences Department before he/she may declare a major in Computer Information Systems or Computer/Business Information Systems

A student must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher in all computer science courses in order to earn a major in Computer Information Systems or Computer Information Systems/Business. A minimum of three computer courses in the majors at or at above the 300 level must be taken in the Computing & Information Sciences Department at Edgewood College. A minimum of two computer science courses in the minor, one at or above the 200 level and one at or above the 300 level, must be taken in the Computing & Information Sciences Department.

Courses in computer science taken more than five years ago may not be accepted. Such courses are accepted at the discretion of the Computing & Information Sciences Department. Any course requirement other than the minimum residency requirement and all 400-level courses, may be satisfied through examination, or Credit for Prior Learning.

Courses in the Computing & Information Sciences Department may not be taken as Pass/Fail.

Courses in the Computing & Information Sciences Department may not be audited.

Once admitted to the College Completion Program, all computer science courses must be completed at Edgewood College.

Courses in the Computing & Information Sciences Department may not be taken as Pass/Fail.

Courses in the Computing & Information Sciences Department may not be audited.
