There are three optional concentrations that students may pursue within the English Major: Creative Writing, Journalism, and/or Teaching. All students must meet the requirements of the English Major listed below, but electives within the major may go toward one or more of the optional concentrations. Students who wish to pursue a more general English degree or who wish to deepen their study of literature will take additional literature courses for their electives.

All students in English are invited to make use of the English Department’s Pathways Program, which helps students pursue interests in possible career paths such as Library Science, Nonprofit Work, Law/Government, Marketing, and more. In addition, all students in English are encouraged to participate in advanced study options including in-depth student research, internships, teaching assistantships, work for the student newspaper, and/or work on the student literary magazine.

Additional Major Requirements


  • One D or G Tagged English Course
  • Other English courses to total 48 credits, not including ENG 110  
  • Transfer students must earn at least 16 credits in English from Edgewood College at the 300/400 level in addition to ENG 481 , the COR 3 seminar. Post-baccalaureate students are exempt from this requirement.
  • At least 5 additional courses in Literature at the 300/400 level, one of which must be a pre-1865 literature course.
