Edgewood’s Accelerated Secondary Program (ASP) is for individuals interested in teaching secondary education (typically for middle schools and high schools). ASP offers licenses in mathematics, science, social studies, and English.
Our program is geared toward working adults and career changers, recent college graduates, and emergency-licensed teachers.
The initial license sequence includes 22 credits of coursework clinical field experiences, and supervised student teaching. The initial license courses (22 credits) can be applied toward a 30-credit Master of Arts in Education.
Classes are offered face to face in the evenings and weekends and incorporate blended/online delivery formats.
The ASP program offers the option of add-on ESL license and add-on Bilingual license.

Program Requirements
The Accelerated Secondary Program (ASP) is a 22-credit program leading to initial teaching license to teach science, mathematics, social studies, or English in secondary education (typically middle and high schools).
The initial license sequence pairs foundation coursework with a methods of teaching and learning sequence along with clinical field experience or practicums and a semester of supervised student teaching.
Completion of this program is contingent on completion of the 22-credit course sequence for licensure with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher, positive evaluations and demonstrated growth in clinical field experiences and student teaching, and successful passage of a teacher performance assessment.
An additional 8 credits are required for a master’s degree in education.
Secondary License Foundation Courses
These 5 courses comprise the Core Foundations Courses for the Secondary License in ASP and include social, learner, instructional, and pedagogical foundations. Required Methods Courses
This is a two-course methods sequence for the Accelerated Secondary Program. The methods courses should be taken in sequence after the foundation courses are completed. Specific Content Area
Per PI 34.022 Statutory requirements, candidates pursuing science or social studies need to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental education, including the conservation of natural resources.
Secondary Teaching Candidates seeking to teach college parallel courses/dual credit or seeking HLC endorsement of 18 credits at the graduate level in the content of math, science, ELA, or SS in Fall 2023 should contact the ASP Coordinator.
Required Student Teaching Courses
Students pursuing an initial license in secondary education complete a semester of supervised student teaching along with clinical evaluations aligned to the Wisconsin Educator Standards.
Clinical Experiences
Clinical Experiences are required for the Secondary Education Concentration Licensing Sequence:
Students are to enroll in the designated practicum/clinical experience during the same semester that they take the associated ED courses:
- EDU 690 and EDU 600 – ASP students are to complete an Initial Level Clinical Placement of 40 hours in a diverse school setting (Grades 6-12) through concurrent enrollment in EDU 704 .
- EDU 698 and EDU 700 – ASP students are to complete an Advanced Level Clinical Placement of 60 hours in a diverse school setting through concurrent enrollment in EDU 706 .
These clinical hours fulfill degree completion and certification requirements for licensure as a teacher.
Practicum placement, observation, and assessment are coordinated through the Office of Clinical Experiences.
A supervision plan of the clinical experience will involve observation and assessment and assigned through the clinical office.
Optional Add-on Licensing Sequence: English as a Second Language (ESL)
Students in the Accelerated Secondary Program may opt to complete an additional add-on license in English as a Second Language (ESL). There are three additional required content courses plus student teaching. Optional Add-on Licensing Sequence: Bilingual Education Licensing

Students in the Accelerated Secondary Program may opt to complete an additional add-on combined license in ESL and Bilingual Education. There are four additional required content courses plus student teaching.
Optional Add-on Licensing Sequence: Reading Teacher
Students in the Accelerated Secondary Program may opt to complete an additional add-on license in Reading Teacher. There are additional required content courses plus supervised field mentoring. |
