Education, Professional Educator: Special Education Concentration, MA/Non-Licensing

The Professional Educator: Special Education Concentration is for educators who would like to pursue continuing education leading to a master’s degree. The Special Education Concentration allows for a primary focus on Special Education, while also offering courses from across graduate program areas so students can tailor a sequence best suited to individualized goals. 

Program Requirements


Students will need to complete the 6-credit Research Core and the 9-credit Social Justice Core. Students will also need to complete 15 credits of additional requirements as indicated below.  

Required Research Core


All students seeking the MA in Education must complete the program with the two-course research sequence, AREDU or EDU 790, and AREDU or EDU 792. The courses must be taken in separate semesters (not concurrently). 

Required Social Justice Core


Students successfully complete any three of the following courses:

Additional Requirements


A total of 15 additional credits, to include:

  • 9-12 credits selected from Special Education courses at the EDU 600 level or above
  • 3-6 credits of EDU prefix coursework at the 600 level or above, selected from outside the concentration requirements.
