This course develops knowledge and understanding of language as it relates to literacy development of bilingual learners. Through a lens of systemic functional linguistics, students learn to develop cycles of instruction that move from oral language to academic written language. This course prepares students to analyze the language demands of a text and model the reading with language learners. Group discussions and assignments focus on approaches to developing literacy in both languages for students learning in a bilingual education setting.
