Additional Program Requirements
In addition to the Core Master’s Degree Experiences, a student must complete the Accelerated Secondary Program (ASP) Licensing Sequence.
Plus, two additional ED courses at the 600-level or higher as approved by advisor.
Accelerated Secondary Program (ASP)
Edgewood’s Accelerated Secondary Program (ASP) is for individuals interested in teaching in middle and high schools. ASP offers licenses in mathematics, science, social studies, and English.
Our program is geared toward working adults and career changers, recent college graduates, and emergency-licensed teachers.
The initial license sequence includes 22 credits of coursework clinical field experiences, and supervised student teaching. The initial license courses can be applied toward a 34-credit Master’s of Arts in Education.
Classes are offered face to face in the evenings and weekends and incorporate blended/online delivery formats.
Program Requirements
The Accelerated Secondary Program (ASP) is a 22-credit program leading to initial teaching license to teach science, mathematics, social studies, or English in middle and high schools.
The initial license sequence pairs foundation coursework with a methods of teaching and learning sequence along with clinical field experience or practicums and a semester of supervised student teaching.
Completion of this program is contigent on completion of the 22-credit course sequence for licensure with a 3.0 GPA or higher, positive evaluations and demonstrated growth in clinical field experiences and student teaching, and successful passage of a teacher performance assessment.
An additional 12 credits is required for a master’s degree in education.
Secondary License Foundation Courses
These 5 courses comprise the Core Foundations Courses for the Secondary License in ASP and include social, learner, instructional, and pedagogical foundations.
Required Methods Courses
This is a two-course methods sequence for the Accelerated Secondary Program. The methods courses should be taken in sequence after the foundation courses are completed.
Specific Content Area
Per PI 34.022 Statutory requirements, candidates pursuing science or social studies need to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental education, including the conservation of natural resources.
Required Student Teaching Courses
Students completing an initial license in secondary education complete a semester of supervised student teaching along with the edTPA. Optional: Add-on Licensing Sequence
Students in the Accelerated Secondary Program may opt to complete an additional add-on license in English as a Second Language (ESL). There are four additional required courses to add this license.
