The Professional Educator: Special Education Concentration is for educators who would like to pursue continuing education leading to a master’s degree. The Special Education Concentration allows for a primary focus on Special Education, while also offering courses from across graduate program areas so students can tailor a sequence best suited to individualized goals.

Program Requirements

Students will need to complete the 6-credit Research Core and the 9-credit Social Justice Core. Students will also need to complete 18 credits of additional requirements as indicated below.

Required Research Core

ED 603 - Intro to Educational Research Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3
ED 692 - Research Capstone Project Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3

Required Social Justice Core

ED 605B - Paradigms of ESL/Bilingual Educ Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3
ED 625 - Inclusive School Law Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3
ED 635 - Diversity in the Classroom Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3

Additional Requirements

12 credits selected from Special Education courses at the ED 600 level or above
6 credits of ED prefix coursework at the 600 level or above, selected from outside the concentration requirements. To fulfill these 6 credits, students may also select from within the 700 level and above Special Education concentration courses, with advisor approval.
