History, BA

Major Requirements

A minimum of 35 credits in History are required as follows:

Electives (11-12 credits)

Elective Courses to complete the 35-36 credit total.  To be chosen in consultation with and to be confirmed with their academic advisor. At least one of the electives must be a course regarding the historical development of a subject taught by another program. A maximum number of the courses offered by other programs a student can take is two.

History Research Methods Requirement

Among the 35-36 credit total, one 4-credit course, 200 level or above, must contain the course work regarding Historiography and Research Methods; to be chosen in consultation with students’ academic advisor.

For students interested in pursuing a teaching license:

For students majoring in history intending to pursue an initial educator license to teach middle/high school Social Studies, it is recommended candidates complete:

• 16 additional credits from at least three of the following social science subjects: economics, political science/international relations, sociology/anthropology, geography, and psychology.
• 6 additional graduate-level credits comprised of the following courses: ED 635 (3 cr), ED 602A (3 cr) in the Accelerated Secondary Education Program (ASP) in the spring semester of senior year. 

Upon graduation, students will matriculate into the Accelerated Secondary Education Program to complete the professional education core sequence for secondary education licenses. In year 5, students will complete an additional 16 credits with an option to earn a Master’s of Arts degree in Education after completing 12 additional graduate credits (*Note* This is a 34-credit MA + License Program).  Contact the Accelerated Secondary Education Program (ASP) for more information.
