THN 702 - Compassionate Cities: Movement and Mechanisms

Minimum Credit(s) Awarded: 3
Maximum Credit(s) Awarded: 3

Compassionate communities/cities intentionally develop local social support networks, spaces, policies and conduct that support people living with life-limiting illness, aging, grief, and long-term caregiving. As a movement, it is a population health approach to palliative and hospice care that traces its origins to the World Health Organization’s Healthy Cities movement (1980s). The underlying philosophy is that end of life and grief care is everyone’s business. This course will examine the philosophy and history of compassionate communities and compassionate cities, the work of Public Health Palliative Care International, examination of existing compassionate communities/cities, and a consideration of the significance and meaning of the movement.

Prerequisite(s): THN 600
