Navigated to Equity in the Domincan-Catholic Intellectual Tradition.

Student and teacher

As a Catholic institution in the Dominican tradition, we ground our commitment to equity in the inviolable dignity of every human person. Catholic Social Teaching affirms that every human life—without exception—possesses inherent worth because each person is created in the image and likeness of God. St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that justice consists in giving to each what is due, and that the common good is not opposed to the good of the individual but ordered toward it. Equity, therefore, is not the flattening of difference nor the guarantee of identical outcomes; it is the moral commitment to ensure that each person is recognized, respected, and given a genuine opportunity to flourish according to his or her gifts.

The Dominican search for truth requires structures that are just and practices that are fair. Aquinas insists that law and institutions must be ordered toward the good of the community, especially the good of those most vulnerable to exclusion or neglect. In this light, equity means examining policies, systems, and habits to ensure they reflect right reason and serve the common good. It calls us to cultivate classrooms and professional programs where intellectual rigor, disciplined dialogue, and charitable engagement create real access to learning and real accountability to truth.

In our academic and professional formation, this commitment shapes both character and competence. Catholic Social Teaching urges solidarity and a preferential concern for the vulnerable, reminding us that justice is measured by how a community treats those with the least power. We therefore prepare students not only for excellence in their disciplines and professions, but for leadership marked by prudence, moral clarity, and responsibility. Anchored in the harmony of faith and reason, we understand equity as a concrete expression of justice—one that strengthens our community, advances the common good, and honors the dignity of every human life.
