The Art Therapy major prepares students for entry into the field of art therapy by integrating coursework in studio art, psychology, and human development with an introduction to therapeutic practices. Students develop skills in creative expression, visual analysis, and interpersonal understanding, along with foundational knowledge of counseling principles and the role of art in supporting mental and emotional well-being. The BA option emphasizes a broader liberal arts approach, often allowing for greater flexibility in electives and the study of humanities or languages, while the BS option places greater emphasis on scientific and technical preparation, including additional coursework in psychology or related sciences. The program prepares students for graduate study in art therapy or related fields and for entry-level roles in community and supportive service settings.
